5 reasons to buy wooden toys this Christmas

Are you deciding what to buy for your children this Christmas? Here are 5 great reasons why you should avoid plastic and choose wood.

With no flashy gadgetry or noisy features, wooden toys encourage children to use their imagination during play.

If you watch your child playing with plastic toys, you’ll notice that most of the time the toy will do everything for them as the child watches on. Toys that don’t move and make sounds can stimulate a child’s imagination a lot more. So you’ll hear a lot more ‘choo choo’ sounds during play. You can really start to see your child bring their ‘knowledge of the world’ and reasoning into play.

Babies love experimenting with objects with different weights and things that ‘feel’ different. And let’s face it, plastic has its uses, but when it comes to texture it’s a little bit boring, and it certainly doesn’t provide the same sensory experience that wooden toys give.

Children aren’t exactly gentle when they play. Plastic toys with small bits tend to break a lot more easily. Wooden toys have been tested and proven to last a long time.

We’ve already established that wooden toys are harder to break and therefore less likely to leave small parts around. A lot less chemicals go into making them, regulations and standards mean that they are a lot ‘greener’ than their plastic counterparts.

Not only do wooden toys look gorgeous compared to plastic toys, but they’re sturdier and more environmentally-friendly. Ok, maybe this is a matter of personal preference and I am slightly obsessed with wooden toys. To me, wooden toys are timeless and beautiful. Yes, wooden toys tend can be expensive. But, as the famous saying goes, you gets what you pay for. A wooden toy, handled well, can be passed down for generations, adding to its charm and value.

So this Christmas, get down on the floor alongside your child and enjoy some classic, plastic-free play together. You’ll be glad you did.

In my studio, I have a vast collection of wooden toys for your little one to play with and also to photograph. I think there is nothing nicer than a beautiful portrait of a child playing with a beautiful toy. The epitome of childhood.

Russian Doll - This is an absolute favourite in the studio. Every child makes a bee line to my Russian Doll. I am lucky enough to have a genuine Russian Doll from Moscow however I love the Russian Doll range from Loula and Deer. They have a large selection of colourful dolls and are very reasonably priced.

Wooden Mice - Little ones love these mice. They are available from Sarah and Bendrix (I love this store).

Wooden Train - A classic wooden train is loved by every generation. Jojo Maman Bebe have a gorgeous wooden train and building blocks and is currently on sale.

Wooden dog - Again, another favourite in the studio (I always ask the children to name him which they love to do). You can buy this wooden dog and other fab toys from the lovely Sue at Yoyo & Flo.
